Exploring Panama: From Historic Casco Viejo to the Paradise of San Blas and the Wonder of the Panama Canal

Panama surprised me. It’s one of those destinations that flies under the radar, overshadowed by more tourist-heavy neighbors. But after spending a few days exploring its colonial charm, crystal-clear islands, and world-renowned engineering marvels, I’m convinced: Panama is a must-visit.

🌆 First Stop: Casco Viejo – The Soul of Panama City

Wandering through the narrow, colorful streets of Casco Viejo feels like stepping into a different era. This historic district, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the beating heart of Panama City. Pastel-painted buildings with wrought iron balconies house boutique hotels, rooftop bars, and artisanal shops that buzz with character.

Every corner seems to tell a story—from the crumbling ruins of ancient churches to the lovingly restored plazas alive with music. At Plaza Bolívar, I sipped coffee while watching street performers and locals go about their day. At night, Casco transforms. Rooftop bars like Tantalo serve up cocktails with sweeping skyline views, blending the old with the new in the most effortless way.

🚢 The Panama Canal – A Modern Marvel

No trip to Panama is complete without witnessing the Panama Canal in action. I visited the Miraflores Locks, one of the best spots to see ships being lifted and lowered like giant toys. It’s not just about the mechanics, though (which are mind-blowing, by the way)—it’s about the vision and ambition behind it.

The visitor center gives a great overview of the canal’s history and global importance. It’s humbling to think that this narrow strip of water changed the course of world trade forever.

✨ Final Thoughts

Panama has something for everyone—history buffs, beach lovers, and curious wanderers alike. Casco Viejo charmed me with its character, San Blas swept me away with its beauty, and the Canal left me in awe of human achievement.

This trip wasn’t just a vacation. It was an adventure into a country rich in culture, nature, and soul.

Day Trip to San Blas – The Hidden Paradise

Just when I thought Panama couldn’t get any more magical, I woke up at 5 AM for a road trip and boat ride to the San Blas Islands—and wow, was it worth it.

The Guna Yala people, an autonomous Indigenous community, manage this archipelago of over 300 islands. No big resorts, no Wi-Fi, no stress. Just turquoise waters, soft white sand, and hammocks swaying under palm trees.

I spent the day snorkeling with starfish, feasting on freshly caught lobster, and embracing the slow rhythm of island life. It felt like a digital detox for the soul. If you ever get the chance, stay a night. The stars out here? Unreal.
